TMJ Massage

Service Description

TMJ is a medical condition affecting the jaw and surrounding muscles, often characterised by pain, clicking, or difficulty in jaw movement. Massage therapy can be an affective complementary treatment for Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) Treatment for TMJ disorder is focused around the shoulders, neck, jaw and head. Intra oral work ( inside the mouth) is used to relax the Masseter and treat the Temporalis tendon. A range of techniques including myofasical release, trigger point therapy and Swedish massage are used to reduce pain and improve function. Intra oral massage can sometimes be a little tender but is usually very effective at releasing tension in the jaw. Other parts of the treatment can be incredibly relaxing, especially around the head and neck. Symptoms include; Headaches/migraines Chronic pain/tenderness in muscles around the ear, neck, face, upper back and shoulders Earaches (without infection) Ringing of the ears (tinnitus) Twitching of the face or eye muscles Difficulty swallowing or speaking Worn teeth Bruxism ( teeth grinding ) Trismus ( difficulty opening the mouth ) Common causes of TMJ include; Whiplash injury to neck Having one dominant chewing side Having worn down dentures or ones that don’t fit properly Having braces on the teeth Repetitive chewing i.e. constant gum chewing Stress Heavy phone use – where the phone is cradled between chin and shoulder A course of treatments are recommended and results can be felt after the first session with best results seen after 6 sessions. A full consultation is given during the first appointment to assess which muscles are affected.
